Headless Horsemen (And Horses)

I certainly hope this is not a harbinger of our coming season.  My sticker appears not to have survived the salt slush grind that was West Virginia mountain interstates yesterday.  Good thing USEA sees fit to send you a new one every year.

I hope Santa (or the Flying Spaghetti Monster or whoever) has graced you all with holiday pony hugs and treats.  I want to offer a congratulations to Allison who is the new owner of a dressage saddle!  Once worn by the legendary Solo, it is sure to bring greatness to any pair of equine shoulders beneath it.

If no one brought you a saddle for Christmas, our BO still has her two jumping saddles available.  I am sure she is open to offers as well, as the ponies always need hay!

Solo and I are plopping around in what's left of the snow, meeting some new neighbours, and scheming of a spring season (ok, maybe that last one is just me).  The days are getting longer (wahhooooo!) and with any luck, evil white precipitation will go back up north where it belongs!

  1. Hey, think of snow as a conditioning element! I was plowing through knee deep drifts with my little mare yesterday, talk about engaging the hind end - it has improved her canter a lot!

  2. Hahahah, molly, I will leave that to y'all! I am eagerly watching the melting, it can't disappear fast enough!

  3. Snow? What is this "snow" of which you speak?

  5. Ok, really I'm just trying to see the silver lining to the cold and never ending snow.... But it was a blast to gallop through!

  6. Ok, I need feeding advice! My mare gets Cocosoya oil on her food, so she is getting fat in her diet, but should I also add a handful of rice bran after a hard workout? I noticed that she didn't have the extra boost of energy that I would have like to see yesterday after spending the previous day being a snow plow. Please advise me oh wise ones of the equine fat needs!

  7. molly, I would think the oil is enough. I am sure Frizz and Alana can chime in with more. But she was probably just tired after her snow workout, that is very normal. If it's an ongoing trend though, get a quick CBC to check blood levels, it should only be about $30.

  8. Thanks! I had a minor freak out last night which resulted in an online search of every feed store in the area for rice bran. I tend toward the paranoid....

  10. Happy New Year to you and Solo. You both have done great things this year. Hope you get your new sticker soon. Yep, an eventer must keep their head about them.

  11. I'm very happy with my new-to-me saddle :-) It was funny when I picked it up - the P.O. lady got a stricken look on her face when the box rattled and clanked - LOL. I explained it was nothing really breakable and that the noise was from the gullets. Now I'll be happily shopping for new irons and a girth - wheee!!!
