Omeprazole Is Omepre-great!

I just wanted to post a very excited update:  upon monitoring (i.e. poking and prodding and staring with furrowed brow) last night, Solo has about a 90% reduction in pain in his back and hindquarters and no longer flinches when I touch his sides!  Yes, this is after only two tubes of Ulcerguard (which I just discovered can be had at almost half the price I paid for it.  I hate you, overchargers.).  I gave him his third tube with a smile; I am so relieved to have my boy feeling better.  It is a horrible, helpless feeling knowing your horse is hurting.

In the warm sun of early evening, we also said goodbye to Solo's winter tail and unfurled it to freedom (right). He now resembles that girl in 1988 who spent way too much time with her crimping iron.

    Aaaw his tail's so cute. I like his butt, too.:) I was starting to worry about him; so glad he's starting to feel better!!

    Great news! When you're done with the treatment, you may want to keep him on U-Gard pellets (not nearly as expensive) as long-term maintenance.

    Thank you for all your good vibes!!! Kate, am looking into the U-Guard. I strongly suspect the ulcers were due to the worms, though, so not sure he will be at a very high risk for recurrence unless he gets worms again. But I need to look into whether they are more prone to ulceration once it happens, as well.

    I'm kinda partial to his shiny butt too. I'm off to go try and RIDE said shiny butt.

    Isn't omeprazole great stuff?! It gave me my pony back a couple of years ago, too. She was also worm-ridden to go with the ulcers, and had very suddenly shriveled into a sad sack of bones that couldn't lose her winter coat and had no growth in the clipped areas. Not pretty! Tip from my vet in case you're interested: U-guard is mainly aloe vera with a calcium buffer... you can buy pure aloe vera juice at Walmart (well, you can here at least, in the pharmacy). Just throw a cup of the juice in the feed every day, and it does the same thing much cheaper. SO glad to hear he's feeling better! :)
